A new luxury spa has opened in a Port Talbot front room, offering an exclusive mineral bath containing sulphur, cadmium and some brown sludge found oozing out of a hole round the back of Tesco.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The T\u0177 Bach Wellness Retreat welcomed its first customer yesterday, marking what its owner described as \u201ca new chapter in relaxation for anyone who can fit in the tub\u201d.<\/p>\n

The flagship treatment, the Afan Valley Mineral Immersion Experience<\/strong>, costs \u00a389 and involves sitting in a small wooden barrel while a woman called Pat periodically tops it up from the kettle.<\/p>\n

Its first customer, who wished to remain anonymous, booked the experience after his wife said he needed to do something for himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was thinking of getting a shed,\u201d said Briand Davies, 62 from Tai Bach, \u201cBut she\u2019d already paid the deposit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spa founder and wellness director Beverley explained that every ingredient had been carefully selected for its local provenance.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople pay hundreds of pounds to sit in volcanic mud in Iceland,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got perfectly good sludge here. It\u2019s this attitude that nothing from Port Talbot is good enough that really holds us back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about the precise composition of the bath, Beverley confirmed it contained sulphur, cadmium and \u201cother things we\u2019re waiting to hear back about\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe laboratory rang three times this morning. They\u2019re obviously excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

The brown sludge is collected fresh each morning using a dustpan and transported to the spa in an old Celebrations tub.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe in complete transparency,\u201d Beverley added. \u201cObviously you can\u2019t see through the water, but we\u2019re very open about where we found it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spa\u2019s interior has been designed around the concept of \u201cauthentic Welsh domestic tranquillity\u201d, featuring an occasional table, one good chair and a gas bill tucked behind the clock on the mantlepiece.<\/p>\n

Ambient sounds are provided by next door\u2019s television.<\/p>\n

Guests can upgrade to the steam room experience, which takes place in the kitchen while Pat boils the potatoes. The cold plunge is available out the back in an empty wheelie bin. The plunge pool is unavailable on Tuesdays as it’s bin day.<\/p>\n

Brian described his first treatment as \u201ccertainly an experience\u201d, although he questioned whether the bath was big enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said it was full-body immersion, but you have to choose which bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

After forty minutes, staff helped him out, rubbed him down with the guest towel and advised him to \u201ctake things slowly\u201d, particularly past anything magnetic.<\/p>\n

Beverley says bookings are already flooding in, with strong interest in the couples package.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s \u00a3160,\u201d she explained. \u201cYou take turns, obviously. We\u2019re a luxury spa, not made of barrels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian has yet to decide whether he\u2019ll return.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got home and the wife asked how it was,\u201d he said. \u201cI told her I\u2019d had a relaxing mineral bath.\u201d<\/p>\n
